An Open Letter to Broncos Country

Hello everyone,

How are you all holding up this season? I know it’s been tough. We aren’t used to seeing our team wallow among the dregs of the NFL, or being eliminated from the playoffs less than halfway through December. That’s on top of the eight-game losing streak the Broncos endured, the one time they were shutout by the Chargers and the fact that they are still winless on the road so far this year. Misery, misery, misery, everywhere we look this season.

Everyone has their own way of coping with this level of losing. Some take to Facebook to openly complain about how much they hate Vance Joseph and how John Elway is long overdue to be fired. Others simply tune the games out and find something better to do on Sunday afternoons, like go for a walk or tend to some household chores (or literally almost anything else). And there are evens “fans” who have stopped supporting the Broncos altogether and have jumped on another team’s bandwagon, such as the Eagles or Rams. To those people, I say good riddance. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out and don’t bother coming back when the Broncos turn things around.

But in case you didn’t notice, the Broncos actually won a game on Sunday, in dominant fashion I might add. This may have felt like sweet relief to you, if you’re tired of watching your team fall flat on their faces every week and want them to end the season on a high note. Or maybe you were completely frustrated because you have embraced the tank and the Broncos are so bad that they can’t even figure out how to get that right. Either line of thinking is alright by me, because it’s your team and your free to support them however you wish.

That being said, it got me thinking about how that was the kind of performance we’re used to seeing from the Broncos, and that one bad season doesn’t change the fact that we are lucky to be fans of a team that has enjoyed so much success over the years.

I’m not saying that you shouldn’t be disappointed over how this season has gone or that you don’t have a right to be pissed off, because you should be and you do. The product that the Broncos have put out there this year is far below the expectations that this franchise established for itself when Pat Bowlen bought the team. You have every right to be angry that they aren’t better. I certainly am.

What I”m getting at though is that seasons like this are few and far between for Broncos fans. Even with a guaranteed losing record this year, the Broncos have still been to more Super Bowls in the past 30 years than the amount of losing seasons that they’ve had. We’ve gotten to witness historically great performances in 1998, 2013 and 2015, and have had the privilege of watching two of the best quarterbacks of all time lead our team. If anything, the Broncos have spoiled us rotten over the years and I think that’s the main reason why there is so much vitriol coming from the fans this season. We don’t usually have to face this type of adversity with our football team.

The Broncos only have four wins this year and it’s driving a lot of people in Denver crazy. The Browns only have four wins TOTAL in the last three seasons. There would be riots all across Colorado if the Broncos ever reached that level of ineptitude.

So be thankful, everyone. Suck it up for a few more weeks, because if history is any indicator, the Broncos will be back to their winning ways before long.

Tonight’s prediction: Colts 20, Broncos 16

Somewhere, Peyton Manning will be watching this game and wondering how great he must have been if his former teams have fallen this far without him. Or maybe he has better things to do, but the Broncos struggled to beat the Colts in Indy even when he was the quarterback. It’s hard to see a different result tonight, which means the Broncos’ woes on the road will continue. Three more weeks, people. Three more weeks…
